Mug warmers aren’t the only things that can help you pass the time during a break at work. For example 3D printed fidgets provide a small repeated action for your hands to perform. Stress relievers aren’t for everyone. Some people prefer a fidget that makes a clicking sound while others may prefer a squeeze fidget.

If you have never 3D printed anything before choosing a simpler design may be a better choice for your first print, You may also want to consider whether or not the fidget makes noise and where you will use it, Hands can easily become preoccupied with fidgets but that doesn’t mean that you will necessarily be able to focus or change your mood with it.

The printed designs in this roundup include a variety of spinners and clickers as well as less traditional fidgets, One of the benefits of 3D printed fidgets is that they can easily be changed to fit your preference like making a fidget more quiet or clicky.

Key Takeaways

Look over model notes when planning to download or print.

Start with simple designs for printing if you are still learning.

Test connected moving parts to ensure they work together.

Check your printed designs and look for sharp edges or cracks as well as loose parts.

What kinds of motion can a printed fidget offer?

Fidgeting can mean a variety of actions, The best motion is the one your hands enjoy repeating, Clearance is the small gap between printed parts that allows them to move freely without fusing.

Print-in-place design integrates the whole toy with all the moving parts in one printed piece, The remaining space allows for joints hinges and gear train to move and interact with one another. A design may have variations that cause sounds and amounts of resistance to vary. Therefore two copies of the same design may feel very different from each other.

Prioritize motion then determine if the design can print with adequate clearance to move.

Design type

Main motion

Sound or feel

Assembly

Spinner

Turns around a point

Smooth spin may hum or rattle

One whole piece or bearing

Folding cube

Folds through linked panels

Repeated folds light taps

Print-in-place or joined panels

Slider

Slides or moves a tab to click a button

Glides or sharp click

Often print-in-place; some require post-assembly

Articulated chain

Bends link by link

Rattling movement

Print-in-place or linked after printing

Because it takes time to measure and set up every model we currently only provide a starting point in the table. Fidget spinners vary from model to model. Some are tight while others are loose. Play with the examples below to get an idea for which designs you like best.

15 Best 3D Printed Fidget Toys to Try at Home

Look through the 3D designs and determine what type of motion you’d like to integrate into your work routine. If a spinner looks like it will fit comfortably in your hand and complement your work style consider printing it, Many of these fidget spinners include moving parts and a bearing, Be sure to check the instructions for each model before printing.

Some models are designed to be quiet while others are rattly or clicky, You may find a new kind of motion or a shape you find appealing.

A basic fidget spinner is made up of three arms which turn around a central hub. Some models include bearings which can increase the spin time. Others may require the user to assemble the fidget spinner themselves.

A fidget cube is made up of a bunch of different fidget toys. Each face may contain a switch a ridge or a rolling feature.

Clicker button: Raise a button press it to hear feel a click and release it to reset. Good for people who prefer a more direct one-handed action. Volume will vary based on model and material so it will not be a good option for a quiet desk.

Fidget keychain: Compact option that attaches to a key ring and gives you a small slider wheel rotator. Good for people who want a toy within arms reach. Tiny parts means it can wear out quickly and a bulky ring can get stuck in pockets.

Squeezy ball: Printed shell is shaped like a squishy ball that returns to its original shape. Good for people who want a soft 2-handed squeeze. A rigid filament won’t be as soft and squishy as you’d expect. Thin walls mean easy tears.

Infinity cube: Repeating linked squares fold over one another to create a continuous loop. Good for people who like a continuous flipping motion. Hinges can get bound if gaps close.

Gear fidget: Linking gears together creates a mechanism that provides linked motion for your fingers. Teeth can get caught if stringing happens during printing.

Slider: A tab glides along a track. It’s good to use in a shared workspace to be less disturbing than clickers. A loose track can rattle and a too tight track can stuck.

Ring fidget: A ring fidget spins or rolls on your finger making movement close to your hand. Check ring size with measurements since printed rings may not fit all fingers.

Maze puzzle: A bead or other small object slides along a carved path. It’s good when you prefer a more guided activity compared to free spinning. Be careful if it comes with a bead since it can get lost.

Articulated snake or chain: Bending segments in a snake or other linked shapes can be fun to shift around in your palm. A worn or damaged segment can get the whole unit stuck or broken.

Twist helix: A long spiral shape can freely twist or bend. It is good when you enjoy a flowing movement and an interesting shape. Prints of long elements can take up a lot of space and thin walls can snap.

Articulated animal: A jolted leg or jaw can be fun to shift and move around in your hand. It can get broken and small joints can get worn and be hard to repair.

Fractal fidget hexagon: Repeatedly fold or flip interconnected hexagons. Some may like this design better than the cube since it folds in a different way. The many hinges means print quality may be more important and it may print with less clearance.

Spiral cone: A cone-like spiral that turns or flexes in the hand. It gives a simple repeated motion. This may be better for someone who wants a larger surface area grip. Like the cube the spiral cone may also be awkward to carry in a pocket.

A fidget keychain favors portability while a larger more articulated design allows more areas to fidget but may take up more space, Choose the option with the motion you like the most first, Then consider the rest of your environment and how it fits in with your schedule and lifestyle.

Which one do you think would help you the most at home?

When using a fidget at your desk consider the noise it makes, A slider may be better than a clicker since a click may carry further. Also consider shape and material. Some are made with loose parts. Try a one-handed option for desk use. Two-handed options would be better for off-desk use.

A more portable option is a compact spinner or keychain, Small toys can fit in a pocket more easily but small moving parts can lose or wear off with use, Also consider if you want to keep the toy attached to your keys or carry it separately.

Simple shapes can be printed more efficiently and cheaply with less material waste. Designs with moving parts can be great first prints to test the bed leveling and overall function of the printer.

You need to also consider the real world behavior and usage of the design to truly understand what you are getting. Loose parts will scatter when put down. If you need to buy or print something consider why and check the model file to ensure it is adequate for its intended use.

You can get free 3D printed fidget toys from community model libraries. Free models are available but some are behind a paywall. Check the model notes or license for restrictions before printing.

There are many sites with designs for 3D printed fidgets. You can also find similar designs based on the motion you want and check thumbnails for details.

Browse community model libraries

These libraries have a variety of designs and artistic work. You can find classics print-in-place models and more. You can sort by community rating.

MakerWorld

Some models include profiles. Profiles describe the print parameters and are typically created by the printers that fabricated the model.

Thingiverse

Its library has various spinner cube and chain designs.

Cults3D

They have artistic designs (some of which are paid).

Many user comments contain print details but the previews may not provide adequate print settings. Ratings can help you assess options but note that ratings may not apply to your printer.

Print details help you evaluate design quality but you must evaluate design details based on your end goal. For example print orientation helps you understand if design details will create undue stress on the print. Comments may help you interpret the design.

Gear spinners may require bearings and a print-in-place cube design may allow the joints to be free.

Check the license before changing or selling prints. Some licenses restrict certain use cases even if a print is personal.

Can you make a simple fidget in Tinkercad?

Make a model that represents a simple single action like a button press rather than modeling a complex system like gears.

A tactile button or clicker makes a good first toy. It’s also possible to make a one piece static texture. This is simpler still because it has no moving parts. A design with moving parts needs multiple pieces with space between them.

Choose a simple action you can describe in a few words: press slide or turn. A button can be designed as a base and a top. A ridged handheld can also be designed as a single piece if no joint is needed.

Keep the first outline broad and large so that it is easy to grip. A small toy can be printed quickly but if the walls are too thin details will not be printed well. Tinkercad is a good program for beginners because you can easily place and join basic shapes.

Leave space for moving parts

For moving parts the shapes need to be designed to leave some space between them. Test and measure to see how much space you should leave. Be cautious to not design a project that is too complicated for the dimensional accuracy of your printer. This is especially true for your first design. Making a static texture is also challenging and satisfying for your first design.

Use this process for the first design:

Choose one motion.

Sketch the main shape.

Build and check the moving part or parts.

Export the design.

Print a small test.

Test how the parts move. Buttons sticking or sliders feeling loose? Then adjust the shape and test again. A custom outline still depends on a filament that gives it the right feel and movement.

Which filament works best for each fidget?

No filament works best for all fidgets. Each fidget is different and has its own unique movement and feel. Start with the movement of the fidget and compare the available filaments. PLA is a good choice for adding small detailed features to a print.

What filament should I use for a hinged print?

TPU works best for a hinge. Not every small feature can be printed with TPU. ABS may also work for small rigid features. ABS can make a more rigid part but may be harder to print.

Can I print something with the strength of ABS but with the ease of PLA?

PETG can bend giving it some flexibility. It can also be used for features that need to be thinner. It can be used for moving parts and may require some adjustment for a print with good detail.

Choose TPU for a flexible squeeze design instead of a rigid gear that needs a firm tooth shape. ABS can create durable but thicker wall parts. An extra thick wall may not work for all home printers. Moving parts can benefit from proper setting tuning.

What print settings help moving parts work?

Sometimes a part looks done printing but doesn’t move. Print in place designs are frustrating enough without first motion failures. Use your slicer experience and model notes to make small adjustments.

Setting variations between printers mean values below are suggested adjustments.

Set layer height

There are cases where a smaller layer height can create better detail on a part like hinges. Try 0.16 or 0.2 mm and see how smooth hinges are on your printer.

Smaller layer heights can also decrease print time. Using a finer layer height can give more curved details. Follow model notes where the layer heights are tested and named. Avoid changing multiple settings at once. You’ll have no way to know which improved results.

Extrusion cleanliness

Check that your extrusion is set properly. A clean neat edge can help keep gaps and joints open. Too much extrusion can close a gap and bind a hinge.

Know the slicer preview and look for gaps and joints that are not clean and neat. Cooling can help.

Check for strings and stray paths while previewing. Use a cooling profile specific to your filament and model. Sometimes a tight clearance may require a different model or a print optimized for that clearance not the use of force after the print.

Keep first layer joints from fusing

A first layer that spreads too far can fuse two adjacent parts at the build plate. In such a case you can try adjusting the flow rate to 97-98% or try increasing the first layer height by -0.2 mm.

Check the following before starting a moving fidget print.

Is the orientation of the model correct?

Is the filament of the correct type?

Is there enough clearance between moving parts?

Print a small test model to check if you can move the joints. If the test model is stiff or it breaks you can make small changes based on your judgment, If a small change doesn’t help use the symptom to decide on the next change.

How do you fix a fidget that sticks or breaks?

You can print a test cube and check if its side walls are stuck together. In that case you can match the symptom to one change before making multiple changes to the printer settings. Print results may vary so test one change at a time.

Use the table as your first step not the final word. A model may require a large change and a rough joint can be due to the settings or the model. Look through the file’s notes before making large changes.

Symptom

Most Likely Cause

First Fix

Stuck Print

Tight clearance extrusion too high

Decrease flow by 2-3%

Stuck gears or spinners

Stringing

Lower nozzle temp by 5°C increase retraction

Snapping part

Weak walls or infill

Try 3 or 4 walls and 30-50% infill

Rough or bumpy surfaces

Inconsistent extrusion or issue with the model

Check model and extrusion before printing

For stuck parts try a 2-3% flow reduction to give more space between printed parts. For stringing that is blocking a gear or spinner try lowering the nozzle temp by 5°C and increasing retraction.

Parts that snap mayneed 3 or 4 walls and 30-50% infill for better strength and structure. If you need a rough surface check the model for any errors and check the extrusion settings to see if they are correct. Choose a toy that works well for you maybe one that would work better in a quieter more adult environment like a home a library etc.

What fidget toy is good for adults? Which one is best for a quiet workspace? Which one is best for pockets?

Many clickers can be really distracting to others if they aren’t considering fit and ease for others. Smooth sliders and rings may be better for a more quiet workspace. A clicker may be easy to use with one hand but its sound can carry in a quiet room. A small movement can still grab a coworker’s attention if repeated often.

Maybe a clicker is good for a workstation but a smooth slider or ring is better for a shared workstation.

Fidget toys aren’t just for kids anymore, With so many different options to help you stay calm and focused the fidget toy craze is definitely here to stay!

A major key to success in adulthood is being able to effectively manage your own stress and find ways to stay centered and grounded, Many adults are turning to fidget toys as a tool to help them be more productive by helping them eliminate stress and maintain their focus throughout the day.

When choosing a fidget toy you first need to consider your lifestyle, Some prefer to spin while others prefer to click Some clickers even have a foldable design. And of course every design is different and offers a unique sensory input.

The information in this book will help you identify the safest and most effective fidgets on the market. It will even help you learn more about the benefits of incorporating fidgets into your self care routine.

Using 3D Printed Fidget Toys for Focus and Relaxation

Many people including you perhaps benefit from using fidget toys for focus. If you click a pen or tap your foot while thinking and need to move to focus you will definitely understand the importance of fidget toys in focusing and relaxing. Fidget toys are the best option to channel yourfocus on the task.

Why Moving Helps You Focus

The brain loves to focus on something repetitive. While performing repetitive activities the brain can maintain its focus on something and also support it in concentrating on the task.

Why Fidgeting is Beneficial

There are a lot of ways in which fidgeting helps for example instead of focusing on something which helps less like pacing around the room it helps in focusing on something which helps a lot like fidget spinner. Fidgeting not only helps in focusing but also relaxes the mind.

Keeping Distraction in Check

Fidgeting helps a lot in focusing but it is always important to check if it is helping in focusing or is actually serving as a distraction in disguise. The biggest problem with a distraction is that it becomes difficult to detect. Fidgeting is always helpful if it is not serving as a way to check if the toy requires you to look away from your work.

Movement should be subtle and not attract too much attention kind of like how people chew gum or listen to music without others noticing. Using a particular fidget that distracts while you’re trying to work is pointless. You should probably find something else to fidget with.

Why Tactile Toys

When people are feeling stressed and anxious there are many products that can help. A big reason for the success of stress toys has been the addition of tactile feedback. Usually tactile feedback includes a surface that offers a different level of resistance and/or a different weight. To lower your heart rate it can help to concentrate on the feedback a stress toy gives you.

Since not everyone reacts the same way to a product with tactile feedback it is helpful to try different products to help you the most. For example some people might prefer a spinner with a flexible axis and some might prefer one with a rigid axis. It all comes down to personal preference.

Best 3D Printed Fidget Toys

There is a wide variety of fidgets that people can use to help them focus. With varying shapes and sizes different people can use different fidgets in varying ways. Although each person has to find the fidget that works best for them there are many 3D printed fidgets that can help.

Infinity Cubes for Endless Folding

These toys are made up of a series of connected cubes that allow for continuous folding.

Benefits and Uses

As the name suggests these toys allow for infinite folding which can help occupy a person’s hands and provide stimulation during long boring meetings. These kinds of toys can also help people who are prone to stress and anxiety by helping them refocus their energy into something less harmful.

Articulated Slugs and Other Figures for Endless Movement

These toys are made of a series of connected flowing and undulating sections which allow for many possibilities in movement.

Benefits and Uses

Since these toys are made up of many connected pieces they are ideal for people who like to have different stimuli on their person. These toys are also great for helping people refocus their energy by allowing them to move their fingers and keep their hands occupied.

Gear Spinners

Gear spinners provide a sensation of rough moving and meshing gears. Like other spinners these provide a smooth and pleasing rotation.

These are great for people who enjoy visual stimuli and especially for people who are mechanical and rational thinkers.

Fidget Rings for Discretion While Fidgeting

Fidget rings are small wearable devices that are designed to help fidget by means of bands that can be spun or beads that can be rolled). They are designed to be worn on the finger.

Fidget rings can be very useful when fidgeting is required in public (i.e. in classrooms or in waiting rooms etc.) because they are less noticeable than other fidgeting devices.

Flexi Chains and linked toys for fidgeting

Flexi chains are made of several links that can be folded twisted or bunch together.

These can be very useful when fidgeting is required for a deep focus task because a user can prevent their hands from drifting and wandering by means of a more complex fidgeting activity that requires both hands.

Maze toys and worry coins

Maze toys require a user to manually direct a ball to guide it through a maze. Worry coins are toys with a design that allows a user to fidget by means of a smooth and flat edge that can be rubbed by a user’s thumb.

Maze toys and worry coins allow a user to interact with a toy in a manner that requires a user to engage with the toy in a deliberate and slow manner. These can be very useful when a user needs to interact with a toy in a manner that allows them to alleviate and manage stress and anxiety.

“The secret to focus is in the hands that help channel our thoughts.”

Anonymous

Take a moment to consider your fidgeting tools. Items wear out over time. Make sure the joints remain free to move. Small parts may work themselves loose, Always check your tools to make sure they are safe to use.

Some movement preferences can be described by the speed of the motion. A fast repetitive movement may require a toy that spins. Mental fog can obstruct focus and attention. Use a toy that requires little effort to set in motion and clear your mind. The moving part may help focus your attention to one thing.

A tapped or drummed a surface may require a toy that spins.

Toys that Click and Slide for More Tactile Feedback

Clicking and sliding toys are very popular among users who prefer to receive feedback in the form of a deliberate mechanical motion.

“The best fidget tools are those that provide just enough resistance to prevent the user from becoming distracted and to keep the user’s mind occupied.”

Many of these toys contain mechanisms that allow for the rotation of a track and/or switch and/or button.

Articulated Toys and Gadgets for Hand Fiddling

Fidget toys that come in the form of a flexi chain allow for countless different fluid and complex movements that are fast and effortless. Users can shape the chain in various forms like a elbow or loop etc.

Because of the mechanisms that allow for jointed complex and fluid movements these toys are perfect for users who require fidget toys that promote movements of the hands and arms and encourage a relaxed state.

Low-Impact Tactile Toys

For adults who require a fidget toy to use discreetly at work there are numerous designs of toys that encourage firing and rolling movements and tactile feedback. Some of these toys are ring-shaped and/or made from metal and can be manipulated to fire roll and/or vibrate.

Worrying rings made from a smooth stone offer a similar effect as a worry stone.

Discretely manipulate small rolling beads on your desk.

Users of these fidgets appreciate the option to subtly manage their need for stimulation. Traditionally fidgets target stimulation by utilizing large overstimulating movements. These options demonstrate that users do not always require large intense movements to meet their stimulation needs.

Great for Class Work or Study

It is important to maintain an appropriate level of stimulation while respecting others, These fidgets can help you maintain your stimulation during repetitive mundane tasks, The goal is to ensure your stimulation does not become distractions for others.

Perfect for Use in Class and at Work

The best fidgets for use in shared controlled environments are ones that do not introduce additional sound pollution. While there are many fidgets on the market that utilize smooth friction-based movements it is up to the consumer to ensure the materials used are of an adequate quality to reduce or eliminate sound.

Always Keep Your Environment in Mind

When you need to remain stimulated but are mindful of maintaining a low-distraction profile for others the fidgets on this list are a great choice. The best contain and reach a comprimise for users and their environment.

Portable for maximum convenience

Each of the fidgets on this list are small and can easily be concealed on your person or in a work surface.

Worry coins

Fidget slugs

Infinity cubes

Discreet Options for Meetings Reading and Computer Work

Toy 1: Fidget Spinner

Toy 2: Fidget Cube

Toy 3: Slip

Sometimes you might need to do something with your hands when you are in a meeting or when you are reading, These fidget toys are designed for just that, You will be able to keep your hand free to do other things while using the toy to help you stay focused.

Fidgeting at Work: What’s the Etiquette?

When you are thinking about using a new fidget toy at work you should try to see how it moves, This is especially true if the toy is new to you and you aren’t sure how to use it, You don’t want to be that person who makes a loud noise or uses a big wide moving toy and distracts everyone in the office.

Soothing Fidget Toys to Help Relax

Fidget toys are designed to help relieve anxiety and stress and promote calm, These can help you shift your focus to something less bothersome, This can help you relieve anxiety and stress so you can have a peaceful mind and body.

Large Articulated Toys for Evening Play

You can be more intense when playing with bigger toys because you’re not as constrained in terms of noise level. Large articulated toys can be heavy and offer more range of motion. You can move them around however you want while doing other activities.

Breathing/Mindfulness Exercise Maze

If you need to relax after work this fidget toy may help. It encourages you to move a bead through a maze. As you move the bead you focus on your breathing to calm your mind. You can also reverse the process and use your breath to move the bead.

Relaxation Travel and Other Free Time

Whenever you’re not working or doing tasks you need to focus on fidget spinners can help relax you. Certain designs have smooth edges and you can use them to stimulate yourself. This input can help keep your mind focused on the present.

Using A Fidget Toy As Part Of Your Personal Wind-Down Routine

Using a fidget toy as part of your bedtime routine helps your brain understand that it is time to slow down and rest, Try using your fidget toy with other bedtime routines like turning on relaxing music dimming the lights and stretching.

Smooth Surfaces

If you have a high level of sensitivity to touch you may also have a preference for touching smooth and/or soft surfaces, Toys with rough textures like seams may be uncomfortable for you to touch. Long lasting usage of a fidget spinner may help you calm down and maintain focus.

Textured Patterns for More Distinct Tactile Feedback

Touch feedback is useful for grounding. However smooth objects often do not supply enough input for touch sensations. If you also experience this issue try using sensory fidget toys that include various ridges and bumps or other geometric structures.

“The right sensory tool acts as an anchor and helps to ground the mind.”

To be clear the physical nature of the toy does not actually “ground” you but it allows you to mentally ground yourself by displacing energy and fidgeting. Toys that utilize flexible designs allow you to displace energy in this way by fidgeting and manipulating the toy in any way you see fit.

If you also prefer a toy that requires some sort of structural integrity try a design that incorporates rigid yet compliant plastics. Such designs also supply a good deal of mechanical feedback.

There are a few things to consider regarding the materials used and the quality of prints. Understanding these details can not only help you assess the safety of a print but also ensure that you get the most out of your 3D printed fidgets.

PLA PETG and TPU

The performance of a fidget toy is dictated by the material it is made from, Toys made from PLA are easy to print and available in many colors and fall in the rigid category, Soft and stretchy TPU toys offer a unique grip PETG falls in the rigid category and has a higher impact toughness and heat defusion compared to PLA.

3D printed parts can benefit from a variety of post processing techniques to improve their final look and feel, One of the more common techniques is to sand down or file down any unwanted edges or seams, Be sure to also test the joints of your printed part to make sure they move freely, Parts that don’t move freely often break during use.

Cleaning 3D Printed Toys

Over time dirt and oils from your skin and hair build up on your fidget spinner, To clean your fidget spinner use a soft cloth with mild soap and warm water, You can also use this method to clean other 3D printed toys.

3D printed fidget toys can seem generic at first glance; two designs can use up similar space build and mechanism. Yet one design can be engaging and the other one can even feel awkward. Small design balances can fit the toy’s feel while still being pleasant. Appearance can attract someone to try out a design but functionality will determine if it will be used again.

One feature that can be overlooked at first is texture. Surface texture will change the feel in the user’s hand and will have a direct effect on the kind of tactile feedback the design will provide. Relying than have a clean smooth and frictionless surface will allow much easier surface traversal. However a textured pattern will have a more engaging feel response with tactile feedback. Even minor design changes can drastically change the feel and engagement of a design.

Resistance to motion is one of the factors that a user will determine if they can be engaged. Having too loose of a resistance will make motion feel uncontrolled and clunky while having too much will make the interaction frustrating and feel negative. Having a nice resistance to the motion will provide a good feedback response without having to exert a large amount effort.

When designing a product shape and grip have to be balanced equally. An interesting design will ultimately fail if it is uncomfortable over time. Things like edges curvature and proportions all make a design more aesthetically pleasing while improving comfort and functionality. With larger designs more compact models are structurally stable while also improving the overall portability of the design.

When utilizing a 3D printer users have a lot of say over the functionality of a design. Users can alter things like layer height and how fast the printer operates to affect various aspects of a design. A lot of a toy’s motion and usefulness comes down to a user’s infill settings. For a design that maintains the same shape changing the infill and weight will have a noticeable effect on the toy’s motion.

Texture grip resistance and a lot of things that are beyond the physical appearance of a design are a focus of the most popular 3D printed fidget toys. These things add to a design a feeling of satisfaction and comfort to a user while also improving the functionality of the fidget toy.

3D printed fidget toys have unique designs that allow you to find toys that fit your needs.

Think about when you will use the toy. At work you will want something that is quiet and smooth. 3D printed fidget toys can have designs that give you options for different toys. Desk toys are nice because you can keep them on your desk and take them out during breaks.

Class is similar to work. You want something that is quiet but can be used repeatedly. Toys that have soft tactile feedback are nice because class and work are built around thinking. These kinds of toys give something for your hands to be doing but won’t take away your focus.

Being out and about creates the need for a toy that is light and portable. Other toys will be hard to carry but can be used easily. Toys that collapse can be stored easily. Things that used to be solid can be stacks which means your toy can be as small as a pen. High quality 3D printing won’t easily deteriorate with different usage like a toy being carried or fit into your backpack.

Sound can also add to the experience. There are people who enjoy satisfying clicks with a tactile feedback mechanisms. Others prefer a more quiet approach. How much feedback and interaction a person wants also depends on their environment. A mechanism that is enjoyable at home can be inappropriate to use at work or in a public space.

Fidget toys can also be used with materials of different stiffness. Firmer materials can imply stronger feedback movement and structure toward the toy. On the other hand materials that are a bit more flexible can offer comfort during prolonged use especially when a person wants a more fidgety experience.

Using 3D printed fidget toys that fit into a daily routine can help with Design preferences. The right toy can enhance focus in distracting or dull meeting or classroom habits that people have.

Many find mechanical use of hands useful when it comes to concentrating on the task at hand. Some people utilize repetitive hand motions and find them productive for themselves. Fidget systems are reliable tools for providing safe sensory inputs for a user while regulating the user’s restlessness. It also helps the user remain engaged for a long time.

For different sensory engagements some fidget systems have different designs. Some provide a series of clicking motions and serve to provide a satisfying sensory experience while engaging for rhythmic sensory control. Other systems use smooth textures for the user and allow the user to transition motions seamlessly through their fingers. These systems also serve to provide a satisfying experience for repeated motion. Also some systems utilize a spinning mechanism to provide motion with a texture to the system.

For customizable printed systems experiences can be created for specific systems. Silent systems help minimize distractions. Users of these systems can choose a texture to suit them the best. Compact and more durable systems are also suitable for traveling and commuting to provide engagement for the user while taking up space. At users’ preferences these systems can be adjusted and experimented by bending or changing the resistance of the system. With these adjustments tools for fidgeting can serve to help with concentration more effectively.

Being purposeful can get technology to work with productivity instead of against it. Opt for distraction resistant tech consider quieter design tech and assess tech for the ability to focus vs. distraction of attention. The objective is not to create constant movement and fidgeting but to incorporate sensory experiences that work with daily activities.

Trying to 3D model and print something for the first time can be an intimidating thought, Learning the fundamentals by starting simple can be achieved by something as small as a fidget toy. They can involve moving mechanisms different textures and different interactive components which can make for a good first project and introduce different useful concepts.

When designing for the first time you should start with a simple concept. Fidget toys can be small and simple such as a click fidget a fidget ring or something like a fidget disc. The goal with the first project should be to understand how to have movement and shape complement each other and not be constrained by a complicated model.

For the next step choose a CAD program that is designed for beginners. Tinkercad is a useful program for forming small shapes to create and edit them and as your skills become more developed programs like Fusion or Onshape allow greater control and more sophisticated design. For the first step you should sketch something and then use the same shapes to form a small design. The CAD program should have the shapes you want available.

When forming moving parts it is necessary to consider ‘tolerances’. Tolerances refer to the spacing you leave so components can move freely after being printed. When the tolerances are too small parts can chemically weld to each other during the printing process. A good starting point can be a 0.2 to 0.5 mm spacing ( of ‘clearance’ ) although this can depend on your printer.

Some common mistakes new designers will make is placing too many details on parts leading to poor printing having walls which are too thin and lead to easy and instant breaking and having moving parts which are too complicated leading to excessive and unnecessary frustration. Often the greatest results come from the simplest designs.

Printing settings change the way the object moves and functions. For example using a smaller layer height means a smoother surface but higher infill means more weight and a stronger print. Also speed and accuracy change in relation to each other. A good first step is to find a midline value for infill and print speed or layer height.

Design and print the first iterations then use them to change and improve movements add flexibility and change texture. Think of this as your first design improvement; however most of the learning happens while you are iterating improvements.

Have you ever found yourself obsessed with a fidget toy so much that you totally lose track of time during a boring moment and then find another toy sitting on the table that you just can’t seem to play with? The toy design and it’s psychology is what separates a toy that has a satisfying click a smooth roll or a gentle snap. Here’s a little insight into the design and thinking that can help you understand movement and the sense of touch.

One of the major aspects that can attribute to that satisfying control is the tactile feedback which is the sensation that your fingers feel as you interact with the object. When an object has a good balance of movement and tactile feedback you will almost always feel some sort of comfort or focus. For instance a button that clicks with some noticeable resistance will always feel better than a button that moves with so little resistance or even a loose button.

Some 3D printed fidget toys are engineered the right way to provide sensory feedback by having resistance and the ability to move and providing the ability to perform repetitive movement. These toys are engineered to give a sequence of small responses which fidgeters will find very satisfying.

Of course the design of a movement always accounts for texture. the sensation that your fingers feel as you interact with the object and the ability to perform that movement repetitively. Some fidget toys are so engineered in that way that they are able to provide a movement and a resistance that people will find very satisfying.

Mechanisms are important too. Spinners use little energy and create constant movement so they’re good for quick fidgeting. Clickers give feedback with movement that starts and stops. Pieces that create linked movement are calming due to the repetitive motion.

Assembling these pieces effectively will improve the experience for the user. Things that are too resistant are frustrating to users and things that are too flexible are unresponsive and overall cheap. Designers try to achieve a balance between how much someone has to do and the prize gained from doing it.

The most satisfying fidget toys stop working and the satisfaction is due to their mechanisms creating small repeatable movements that feel natural when being fidgeted with.

3D printing a fidget toy is very simple and straightforward. Download the design hit print and wait. However the toy is more complex than regular printed designs. Fidget toys have moving parts and these can be more complex to print than a simple fidget toy. Issues with moving parts usually come more from the printer’s settings than the design itself.

3D printed fidget toys can help new designers find issues with their printers. Moving parts can help find mistakes with printer calibration and settings. Luckily adjusting a few settings can result in a big improvement.

The first setting you want to play with is layer height. For beginner designs a setting of 0.2 mm is good. It’s a good setting in terms of print time and quality. If you lower the layer height to 0.12 mm you get a smoother surface but at the cost of longer print times. If you increase layer height it can decrease the time to print but make moving parts feel rough.

The second is infill. For fidget toys you actually want to aim for a lower infill of around 10–20% so they stay light and allow the toy to be played with. A higher infill actually makes toys heavier and doesn’t help them at all.

Another setting that can help with quality is printing speed. A moderate speed for printing should be between 40–60 mm/s. Faster print speeds can lead to imprecise prints which is very noticeable with small mechanical designs.

As a beginner you want to keep things simple for your first few projects Here are a few examples to consider:

Spinner Designs

Snake Chain and Scaled Projects

Rolling Rings

Clickie Mechanisms

Until your printer is properly adjusted don’t attempt designs that use magnetic systems or gear mechanisms.

The most common mistakes that beginners make include: failing to calibrate bed leveling incorrect heat settings and skipping calibration. Small setup details are very important and make a substantial difference. Once you’ve properly adjusted your printer you can look forward to smoother and stronger fidget designs and arguably most important better and more satisfying user experiences.

Seven different 3D printed fidget toys were used to determine if they are suitable aids for maintaining work focus or if they become desk distractions themselves. Various designs were employed including models that used spinners clicking articulation rollers and magnetism during meetings study sessions commuting and times requiring fidget-free focused work.

During a Monday deep work session the first fidget toy used was a classic spinner. It was a satisfying outlet for focus energy but quite quickly became a distraction. Constant movement was more entertainment than tool. It was in order of effect: low for noise medium for distraction and high for portability.

On Tuesday a clicking design was used. It was a great fidget tool but again the social work distractions of a phone call were noticeable with medium high noise and a low distraction level. It was highly portable.

By Wednesday the smaller 3D printed fidget toys had become quiet and easily handheld desk aids. The surprise winner of the week was a compact roller design. Movement could be sustained without noise or visual attention.

On Thursday an articulated chain-style toy was used during commuting and short breaks. It was flexible lightweight and easily carried. Repetitive movements however became unfulfilling. It scored in the order of effect: low for noise low for distraction and very high for portability.

The magnet form was tested on Friday. It was satisfying to use and brainstormed with during testing. However the magnets were loud when joined together disrupting the session.

After five days something became apparent: the best 3D-printed fidget toys aren’t the more advanced toys. For office workers and students a simple quiet and compact toy would be the most appropriate. A more advanced toy with a stronger feedback function would be more appropriate for workers with ADHD and those who are working remotely. Often the most simple fidget toy serving as a desk companion is the most effective.

3D Printed fidget toys don’t need to take up lots of space and be a lengthy printing process. There are a great number of designs that are small take little filament and are cost efficient. These designs offer lots of satisfying movement and are great for beginners testing printer settings and using up leftover filament from previous prints.

The worry coin is one of the simplest designs and is great for a fidget toy. A worry coin contains a small surface with texture and even provides tactile feedback. Many designs of worry coins can be printed within a time span of 20 to 35 minutes take 5 to 10 grams of filament and cost around $0.30!

Another simple design is the thumb roller. The thumb roller provides great movement and is fully functional for even the quietest environments. The thumb roller can be printed in a time span of 30 to 45 minutes and takes about 8 to 12 grams of filament The cost typically is around $0.30 to $0.40!

If you want even more movement a small articulated fidget chain can help with that. Models of fidget chains use about 10 to 15 grams of filament and can be printed in a time span of 45 to 60 minutes. Many of these designs are print in place so beginners will not have to deal with assembly at all.

If you are looking for a fidget toy that is even more cost effective the mini gear spinner is a great option. The gear spinner is even a more mechanical fidget toy with a filament cost of about 12 to 18 grams and a printing time of about 50 to 70 minutes, The cost for this fidget toy is about $0.50 to $0.70!

For the best 3D printing experience use PLA filament It prints easily and works for projects needing fine details. Try an infill of only 15-20% to help cut down material use. Low filament fidget toys help prove that even fun projects don’t have to take a lot of material time or money.
