May 22, 2026Seven different 3D printed fidget toys were used to determine if they are suitable aids for maintaining work focus or if they become desk distractions themselves. Various designs were employed including models that used spinners clicking articulation rollers and magnetism during meetings study sessions commuting and times requiring fidget-free focused work.
During a Monday deep work session the first fidget toy used was a classic spinner. It was a satisfying outlet for focus energy but quite quickly became a distraction. Constant movement was more entertainment than tool. It was in order of effect: low for noise medium for distraction and high for portability.
On Tuesday a clicking design was used. It was a great fidget tool but again the social work distractions of a phone call were noticeable with medium high noise and a low distraction level. It was highly portable.
By Wednesday the smaller 3D printed fidget toys had become quiet and easily handheld desk aids. The surprise winner of the week was a compact roller design. Movement could be sustained without noise or visual attention.
On Thursday an articulated chain-style toy was used during commuting and short breaks. It was flexible lightweight and easily carried. Repetitive movements however became unfulfilling. It scored in the order of effect: low for noise low for distraction and very high for portability.
The magnet form was tested on Friday. It was satisfying to use and brainstormed with during testing. However the magnets were loud when joined together disrupting the session.
After five days something became apparent: the best 3D-printed fidget toys aren’t the more advanced toys. For office workers and students a simple quiet and compact toy would be the most appropriate. A more advanced toy with a stronger feedback function would be more appropriate for workers with ADHD and those who are working remotely. Often the most simple fidget toy serving as a desk companion is the most effective.
